The first day of preschool can be both exciting and overwhelming, but preparation can help ease some of the anxiety for both you and your little one. Arming your child with all the supplies they’ll need will set them up for a successful first day and beyond. Here are the items kids need most for their first day of preschool.

Supplies for Your Child’s First Day of Preschool

1. Backpack

Let children choose their own backpack with their favorite characters on it or in a fun color. Just make sure it’s big enough to hold their supplies without being too big, and write their name somewhere on it or use a luggage tag.

2. Lunchbox

Choose an insulated lunchbox that will keep their lunch at a safe temperature all morning. When it comes time to prepare their food, check with the preschool to see if they have any restrictions due to food allergies.

3. Art Supplies

preschoolSome nursery schools give you a list of art supplies to bring, but if not, keep it simple and send them with a pencil, eraser, pencil case or bag, and notebook. If they want markers, make sure they’re washable.

4. Folder

A simple two-pocket folder makes it easy for your little one to bring home notes and memos from their teacher, permission slips, and any schoolwork they did that day.

5. Blanket

This doesn’t need to be large or heavy as it’s simply needed for comfort during naptime. A nice towel can work just as well if you don’t have an extra small blanket available.

6. Tissues

Tissues or baby wipes are probably the teacher’s most-needed items and may be something they frequently have to purchase themselves. Sending your child with one or the other will be appreciated.

7. Comfort Item

Not all nursery schools allow kids to bring a stuffed animal or toy from home, so check with them in advance. If these items aren’t allowed, send them with a photo of mom and dad or the family pet to alleviate feelings of anxiety and homesickness.
