Whether you’ve moved to a different part of town, or you’ve simply found a better deal on your prescriptions, transferring your medication to a different pharmacy can seem confusing if you’ve never done it. But with health insurance changes or different pharmacy discounts, moving your prescription could save you money and time. When transferring medications, consider the following three tips to ensure the transition goes smoothly.

3 Tips to Ease Your Medication Move

1. Inform Your New Pharmacy You’re Switching

Letting your new pharmacy know ahead of time that you’ll be transferring your prescriptions allows them to inform you what you’ll need to complete the transaction, as well as giving you an opportunity to provide some personal and medical insurance information. This will typically include your name, address, telephone number, and date of birth, in addition to a copy of your health insurance card. This will save you time and may help avoid any delays when you need your medications the most.

2. Talk to Your Physician

pharmacyAnother tip to ensure a smooth pharmacy transition is to talk with your doctor about the change in services. Your primary care physician generally has your pharmacy information saved in their system. If you go to the doctor for an illness and forget to remind them of the switch, this could cause miscommunication between the pharmacies. Work ahead of time and let your doctor know as soon as you make the switch.

3. Talk to Your Insurance Company

Certain types of medication can only be transferred one time to a different pharmacy. Schedule III, IV, and V prescriptions can be moved once regardless of how many refills you have left. Many of these prescriptions are more familiar than you realize, including Ambien®, testosterone, and Xanax® to name a few. If you have already filled these medications at a different pharmacy, whether due to relocation or an out-of-town emergency, you’ll be unable to transfer them again.
