Every invasive treatment requires planning and cooperation between patient and physician. Whether you’re having a vasectomy, endoscopy, or abdominal surgical services, knowing what to expect before the procedure will help reduce anxiety. Being educated about the process will also allow you to adequately prepare. Learn more in the guide below about pre-surgery, so you feel more comfortable with your treatment.

Guide to Pre-Surgical Services

What to Expect

Onamia Surgical ServicesWhen you arrive for your treatment, you will sign in at the desk. The office staff may ask you to fill out consent forms and review your insurance information. You will also receive an ID bracelet. Next, you will meet with your anesthesia and surgical services team.

They will ask you how you are feeling, double-check your health history, and review your list of prescriptions. They will also tell you more about the anesthesia you will receive for your surgery. Feel free to ask any questions you may have.

Next, you will dress in a hospital gown and slippers. Your surgery team will take your blood pressure and heart rate. For safety and security reasons, they will also ask you your first and last name and the type of procedure you are having. When it is nearly time for surgery, you will receive an IV containing what physicians call “interoperative fluids.”

How to Prepare

Bring your identification and insurance card to your surgical appointment. Talk to your medical provider ahead of time to find out if you need to bring information about your X-rays or test results. Follow your medical provider’s pre-surgery instructions carefully. Some patients may need to stop medications, and most people will need to stop eating the night before the procedure.

If you are staying at the hospital for overnight observation, pack a bag of supplies. Bring warm, comfortable clothing, as well as shoes and toiletries. You may also need to carry your medical devices or medication. Don’t forget to arrange for a ride home well before your treatment. If necessary, take time off from work and ask for assistance while you recover.
