Bacon isn’t just for breakfast. A number of tasty American foods incorporate bacon whether you’re sitting down for lunch or dinner, like the BLT. Find out more about this classic sandwich’s history below.

Where Did It Come From?

American FoodEven before recipes started being published in such literature as the “Good Housekeeping Everyday Cook Book” of 1903, BLTs may have been a staple American food for almost two centuries. The concept of the sandwich was invented in the 1700s, so it’s possible the BLT was born around that time as well, before people wrote down their recipes.

BLTs began popping up in cookbooks as early as the late 1800s. After World War II and the newfound availability of seasonal ingredients year-round, BLTs rapidly increased in popularity, to the point that Hellmann’s® started marketing their mayonnaise as the perfect accompaniment to the sandwich.

American FoodSince then, mayonnaise has become the standard condiment for the BLT, but there are additional variations. Add some avocado slices, for example, and the sandwich’s richness is enhanced dramatically. Make the bacon just slightly crispy to add a bit of crunch without losing any juiciness. Put it all on some French bread that’s thick enough to hold all the ingredients while soft enough to bite easily. With just a little salt and pepper, the BLT is a delicious option for lunch or dinner.
