One of the best ways you can ensure your child's future health is to help them form good dental care habits now. Dental hygiene starts younger than you may have realized, with cleaning gums before teeth have even grown. But what comes after that, and when should you introduce teeth-cleaning products like toothpaste?

When your child is an infant, you should clean their gums with a soft, clean cloth or a toothbrush designed for their age. No toothpaste is involved in this process, so only use clean water.

You should establish a teeth-cleaning routine twice per day, as well as continuing to clean and rub the gums. You should also schedule your child's first appointment with a dentist as soon as their teeth begin to come in.

Non-fluoride toothpastes have no value in cavity prevention, so you'll have to switch to a fluoride formula before long. Some dental care experts advocate waiting a few years, as too much fluoride can cause your child's teeth to display white discolored patches. However, the benefits of fluoride outweigh the risks, so, at most, only a small smear of toothpaste is needed.

Many toothpaste brands have formulas marketed to children, and there's no reason not to use them. As long as you choose a fluoride toothpaste, your child will get the full benefit, and you may find they enjoy the flavors available. However, the fluoride content is usually the same as adult toothpastes, and adult versions are more likely to contain slight abrasives which help clean teeth, so an adult toothpaste is also a valid choice.
