It’s not uncommon to suffer eyestrain due to frequent computer use. Tired eyes can result in redness, burning, and dryness, as well as soreness in the neck and back. Oahu’s highly regarded optometrists at the offices of Edwin Y. Endo, O.D. & Associates suggest that computer ergonomics may be the key to a more comfortable technological experience.

Computer ergonomics creates a more comfortable environment for the entire body. The goal is to reduce discomfort in every capacity, from strain on the eyes to the wrists to the neck and back. The Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) has some helpful ideas that may reduce eyestrain and overall discomfort while using the computer:

  • optometristSit Straight: Sitting upright is not only good for your posture, but it also prevents strain on your back and neck. Sitting up straight also allows you to face the computer head-on, so your eyes don’t suffer strain viewing it from an unnatural vantage point, such as with your neck uncomfortably bent.
  • Adjust the Display: The goal is to view your screen without distracting glares or reflections, which can cause you to strain uncomfortably to view the screen. By positioning it properly, you can easily read without tiring your eyes. You should also bring the screen close enough to you, so you can read it without leaning forward.
  • Fix Your Chair: How you position your chair and desk can also make a huge difference in your comfort. Optometrists suggest for wrists and hands to be at a 90-degree angle with the upper arms while your thighs should be parallel to the floor. The idea is to be positioned in such a way that doesn’t exert pressure on your wrists, hands, legs, or back.

Computer ergonomics can have a positive impact on both your physical and mental comfort in the office. When your body and eyes are relaxed, you’ll experience considerably less stress.

If you wear contact lenses or glasses and experience strained eyes, despite taking these measures, you may need to schedule an appointment with your optometrist. The eye doctor can determine whether your prescription has changed. For more information on the services offered by Edwin Y.
