If you’ve worn contact lenses for a while, you probably know the basics. If you just started wearing them, your eye doctor may have given you a long list of dos and don’ts. There’s a lot more to just putting them in and taking them out each day. Any missteps could lead to infections or other severe complications.

Named the best optometrists by Honolulu Star Advertiser, Edwin Y. Endo, O.D. & Associates in Aiea, HI, offers these seven tips for contact lens wearers:

1. Replace Your Contact Lenses as Instructed

Whether your contacts are okay to use every day for a month or you have daily disposable lenses, throw them out as instructed. Wearing your contact lenses longer than prescribed increases your risk of infection.

2. Wash Your Hands

Always wash your hands before handling your contact lenses. Avoid using oily or scented soaps, and dry your hands with a lint-free towel — a microfiber towel works great too.

3. Use the Right Solution & Storage Case

Make sure you have the right solution for your particular contact lenses. Your eye doctor can offer a few recommendations; most people can use multi-purpose solutions with no problems. Wipe your case out, and let it air dry when it’s not in use.

4. Avoid WaterContact Lenses

Water and contact lenses don’t mix. The optometrists at Edwin Y. Endo, O.D. & Associates advise their patients not to even wear them in the shower. The microbes in tap water can cause infections and other complications.

5. Remove Your Contact Lenses When They Hurt

If your contact lenses feel dry or uncomfortable and rewetting drops don’t help, take them out. Leaving them in will only worsen the irritation.

6. Use Makeup That’s Safe for Contact Lenses

If you plan to wear eye makeup, like mascara or eyeliner, make sure you use products that are safe for contact lens wearers. Avoid waterproof and lash-lengthening mascaras, as these can stain the lenses.

7. Don’t Throw Out Your Glasses

It’s always good to have other options if your contact lenses are causing irritation or simply to give your eyes a break.

Following these tips will keep your eyes healthy and make wearing your contact lenses a comfortable experience every day. The optometrists at Edwin Y. Endo, O.D. & Associates also offer color contacts and fashion eyewear, so you can always look your best. Visit the website for more information, or call (808) 487-5500 to schedule an appointment.
