While drones, or unmanned aerial systems as they're more technically called, are becoming increasing sophisticated and affordable, the regulatory gray areas made many companies hesitant to invest and some users uncertain about their liability insurance requirements. In February, the FAA issued a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking about the registration and licensing of drones, which has inspired a lot of interest.

insurance agentAlcorn Insurance Agency, one of Chama, NM's leading insurance agencies, knows how attractive drones can be for both recreational and commercial purposes. But as of yet, there isn't enough data for insurers to set industry-wide standards. With other tools and recreational vehicles, insurers have access to a lot of data they can use to determine the likelihood of a client filing a claim, but drones are simply too new. With so little data available, insurers aren't sure what factors contribute to accidents or how much they're likely to cost.

However, the FAA's new guidelines will require drone operators to take an aeronautical safety course before being licensed, and many insurers may begin offering discounts on liability insurance if the operator has gone through more advanced safety training. Other risk factors which many insurers have only started considering are the wide quality variations between manufacturers and their documentation. The FAA may also issue requirements for drone manufacturers, treating them in much the same way as any other aircraft.

The FAA has also acknowledged that drones, much like any other vehicle, must be well-maintained for optimal safety. In the future, liability insurance providers will expect all unmanned vehicles to be well-maintained. If poor maintenance leads to an accident, your insurance company may deny you, forcing you to pay the costs out of your own pocket.
