When was the last time you actually looked at the box your toothpaste comes in? Most toothpaste you can find at the drugstore contain artificial colors and dyes or synthetic flavors often used to improve the taste of toothpaste and cause it to foam and lather. Although these ingredients aren’t harmful, the dentists at the Pediatric Dental Group in Honolulu, Hawaii, suggest using homemade natural toothpaste instead.

In addition to offering full-mouth restorations, includingimage dental implants; orthodontics; and teeth whitening, the dentists at the Pediatric Dental Group are committed to teaching their young patients good dental care habits, including brushing and flossing daily. Using only three ingredients — coconut oil, baking soda, and essential oils — that can be found at your local grocery store, you can make a simple natural toothpaste that will make your teeth shine and will save you money in the long run.

Homemade Natural Toothpaste

1/2 cup coconut oil
3 tablespoons of baking soda
6 drops peppermint oil
3 drops tea tree essential oil

Melt the coconut oil. Add the baking soda and drops of essential oils. Stir until everything is incorporated. Put the toothpaste into a small glass jar. Let cool completely. Store the toothpaste at room temperature. To use, dip your toothbrush in, and scrape a small amount onto the bristles.

This is an excellent alternative to store-bought toothpaste. Coconut oil has antibacterial and antimicrobial properties, and baking soda removes surface stains from your teeth and has teeth whitening properties. The essential oils not only make the toothpaste taste good, but they also make your breath smell good.
