If you've spent any time in the dentist's chair for cavities, you have probably received one or two fillings. While it's likely that getting fillings may be the end of your experience dealing with a cavity, there could be a complication or two that would require further follow-up after the procedure. Cincinnati-based restorative dentistry expert Dr. Robert Petrtyl recommends keeping an eye out for the following developments after receiving your fillings:

  • Tooth Sensitivity: The tooth that bears the fillings can be especially sensitive after the dental work is completed. Pressure, air, sweet foods, or cold could all trigger the sensitivity. This issue is most commonly seen in those who have received composite fillings.
  • Shock That Occurs When Your Teeth Make Contact With Each Other: Some patients who have undergone restorative dentistry experience a sharp jolt or shock when the tooth with the fillings touches another tooth. Known as galvanic shock, this happens when two metals connect to create an uncomfortable electric current in your mouth. If you received metal fillings and that tooth makes contact with another tooth that also has metal fillings, galvanic shock could occur.

Tooth sensitivity should diminish after a couple of weeks. If it doesn't, it's important to let your dentist know what you are experiencing so that the situation can be remedied. It can be difficult for dentists to predict how a patient will respond to certain materials, says Dr. Petrtyl, and your feedback will help your dentist make more suitable choices regarding your fillings in the future.
