The holidays are a fun and festive time for all. However, with all of the decorations, drinks, travel, and chaos comes increased risks. Daniel Oliver – Farmers Insurance Agent in Minneapolis, MN, wants to make sure you and your family are safe and sound this holiday season, and suggests the following tips to be sure:

  • Use Battery-Powered Candles: Standard candles cause almost half of home decoration fires.
  • Do Not Connect More Than Three Strands Of Lights: Doing this could blow a fuse or start a fire.
  • Inspect Electrical Devices & Decorations Before Use: Check for damaged sockets, bare wires, and loose connections. If not addressed, these may cause a shock or fire.
  • Avoid Damaging Cords: Cords should never be crushed or pinched by furniture, squeezed into small spaces such as doors, placed under rugs, stapled, or nailed. These cause shock and fires.
  • Keep Combustible Items At Least Three Feet From Heat Sources: Keep foods, clothing, decorations, and any other items that may catch fire away from heat sources.
  • Stay In The Kitchen While Your Food Is Cooking: Unattended cooking equipment is the number one cause of home cooking fires.
  • Do Not Overload Electrical Outlets: Overloaded outlets and faulty wires are a frequent cause of fires during the holidays.
  • Keep Your Tree Fresh: If you have a real tree this Christmas, water it daily. Dry trees can become serious fire hazards.
  • Check Your Labels: Decorations that don't have any kind of certification label from an independent testing laboratory haven't been tested for safety.
  • Turn Off, Unplug, & Extinguish: All decorations should be turned off and unplugged before going to sleep, and candles should be blown out to avoid an overnight fire.
