Toenail problems range from ugly and unpleasant to painful. To maintain toenail health requires attentive foot care. Cincinnati’s Choice Podiatry Associates diagnoses and treats nail and foot problems, and the staff also advises you to take your own preventative measures at home.

Three tips for keeping your toenails healthy:

  • Athlete’s Foot & Fungus: Prevent athlete’s foot and fungus infections by drying water between your toes and wearing socks, shoes, and sandals that allow your feet to breathe; If your feet sweat during the day, try using powder to help absorb excess moisture. If you are unlucky enough to have athlete's foot or a fungal infection, you can treat these foot problems with anti-fungal creams. With medicated creams, the fungus will go away in one to four weeks. Also, you can soak your feet in hot water for 10 minutes every day. If you want to avoid this foot problem in the future, you should also try to wear shoes whenever you walk outside of your home.
  • Ingrown Toenails: To prevent ingrown toenails, do not excessively trim your cuticles. Choose shoes that breathe and do not pinch or squish your toes. If you have ingrown toenails, soak your feet in warm water mixed with iodine or Epsom salt. Then, trim your nails and apply an antibiotic. If the condition gets painful, it's time to call a podiatrist.
  • Toenail Trauma: Athletics, falls, toe stubs, and large, crushing objects are all causes of toenail trauma. It is important to treat these bruises before your nails fall off. If you have trauma, wear loose-fitting shoes, bandage your toes, and apply antibiotics to prevent them from getting infected. In some cases, you may need to consult with a podiatrist for further treatment or to have part of the nail removed.
