Discovering a spider in your home is an unwelcome surprise. Not knowing what type of eight-legged guest you have under your roof can be even more troubling. While some spiders are harmless, others are toxic and warrant calling an exterminator for safe removal. Learn about a few common types of spiders found in Nebraska below.

What Are Common Types of Spiders in Nebraska?

1. Wolf

Wolf spiders have hairy bodies that can be light brown or gray. These critters can grow up to 1.5 inches in length. In most cases, wolf spiders inhabit dense grasses and tall shrubs. However, they may accidentally end up indoors, especially if you have shrubbery and a lush lawn around your home.

These spiders don't make webs, so you can't rely on these visual hints to know they're inside. They’re mostly nocturnal, so look for them in dark corners of the home. Luckily, these critters aren’t harmful.

2. Brown Recluse

exterminatorAlso known as cellar spiders, these critters are normally found in crawl spaces, basements, sheds, and cellars. You can recognize these spiders by their small oval-shaped bodies and long skinny legs. The body is usually a dark brown or cream, and some may have a fiddle-shaped marking on the abdomen.

You’ll know these critters are in the home thanks to the massive webs they create. In some cases, their webs are so extensive that they take up an entire crawl space. If you find an elaborate network of threads, contact an exterminator to take care of these poisonous spiders.

3. Black Widow

The black widow spider is identified by its black body and the red hourglass shape on its abdomen. However, this marking isn’t always obvious. If you aren't sure if a spider is a black widow or not, call an exterminator.

These critters are highly toxic. Black widows are cobweb spinners and weave irregular mazes of webs. They often set up on freight and furniture shipments, so inspect deliveries carefully as you open them.
