Many drivers don’t know how some of the parts of their vehicle function. One such component is the alternator, which connects to your car’s battery. If you’re in the dark about what this part does and when to repair or replace it, use the following guide to learn more.

How Does It Work?

The alternator under your vehicle’s hood is responsible for generating electricity. While you might associate this role with the battery, that component really only uses electricity to start the engine or when the engine is off.

The alternator distributes electricity while the engine is in operation. While you’re driving, it uses this electricity to recharge the battery.

The alternator is located in front of the engine and is surrounded by a belt. The belt is rotated by the engine’s crankshaft, and it spins the rotor inside the alternator. Magnets positioned around the rotor move over copper wiring in the alternator, creating a magnetic field.

As the rotor spins near the magnetic field, it turns mechanical energy into electricity. Finally, the voltage regulator controls the flow of electricity that leaves the alternator and reaches the battery and the rest of the vehicle.

How Can You Tell When It’s Not Working?

alternatorIf the alternator isn’t generating enough voltage, it may not be charging the battery while the engine is running. As a result, your headlights might seem dimmer or burn out prematurely. Alternatively, the battery may die, stalling your car and forcing you to call for roadside assistance.

You might also be able to identify issues by keeping an ear out for strange noises, such as grinding or whining. These sounds can indicate faulty bearings inside this auto part.
