Installing new sod on your property makes your lawn appear healthier and increases your curb appeal. However, it’s imperative to know how to water it properly to establish roots. Here's a lawn maintenance guide to ensure an even, healthy growth.

The First Two Weeks

Most watering is required during the first 2 weeks of having sod. Your first watering should be enough to soak your sod and at least 2 inches of the soil underneath. Afterward, you should water it at least four to six times a day (preferably during the morning or the late afternoon when the sun’s not at its peak) for about 5 minutes each until you’ve established roots. However, reduce the amount of hydration you’re giving your sod if the ground is too soggy.

Long-Term Watering

sprinklersStart to reduce the frequency that you water your sod right before your first mowing, preferably when roots are starting to establish in your soil. You’ll know your roots are growing if you feel some resistance when you try to lift up one of your sod corners. Once your roots are deep and fully established, you can switch to watering your lawn every day or every other day for 15-20 minutes until your soil is penetrated with moisture.

How to Water Your Sod

Sprinkler System

This type of watering system is an efficient, environmentally friendly way to hydrate your sod. Automatic sprinklers can be installed to distribute the proper amount of moisture to every section of your lawn. In addition, modern sprinklers come with programmable timers and sensors to water your sod at designated times and deactivate when there are periods of heavy precipitation.

Drip Irrigation

This irrigation system uses various pipes, valves, and emitters to distribute water throughout your sod. It’s designed to add moisture slowly and directly to the roots, which results in a more even growth and prevents overwatering. It also requires 30-50% less water than other watering methods
