Wine tasting is an enjoyable experience that introduces you to the finer points of the beverage. You’ll sip, savor, and learn about the subtle nuances that differentiate one from another. At the same time, you’ll mingle with like-minded enthusiasts who share your passion or interest in learning. If you’re new to the scene, here’s what to expect at the first event.

What Happens at a Tasting?

Tastings present the opportunity to sample different varieties of wine. You’ll learn to distinguish between crisp whites and rich reds and delve into the preparation of each. Usually, the winemaker or owner of the winery is present to provide information about the types of grapes used, where the ingredients are sourced, and which foods pair with the bottles.

You’ll also learn the art of tasting the wine properly to taste more of its flavor. You’ll gently swirl and smell the wine to detect the notes the pourer described. Then, you can swish the beverage in your mouth to experience its full flavors. You can swallow or spit the drink since there will be several varieties to sample during the event.

What Are Some Common Wine Descriptors?

wine tastingIt helps to go into the wine tasting with an understanding of some common vocabulary. You may hear the pourer refer to the wine as aggressive. This typically refers to elevated acidity levels, where less fruit is present in the blend. A big wine is one that’s heavy in flavor, oak, and tannins. Tannins are derived from grape skins and contribute to a dry sensation in the mouth.

Wines that are less acidic are considered buttery. They’re generally rich and creamy, with a smooth mouthfeel. Wines that are described as delicate are light and subtle in their scent. Since they get a lot of their flavors from the oak barrels they’re fermented in, they may be referred to as spicy or oaky.
