Converting an unfinished basement into a home gym has many benefits, from saving you money on a gym membership to utilizing the space at any time. However, designing one takes careful planning, and there are a number of factors to consider while working with a remodeling contractor. Here’s an overview of what to keep in mind.

What to Consider When Designing a Basement Gym

1. Layout & Flooring

First, consider the floor plan that works best for your needs. You may want separate rooms for different types of equipment, such as one for a treadmill and bike and another for weights and exercise machines. Another option is to create an open, free-form space by removing the basement walls. However, keep in mind that some may be load-bearing walls, so they may need to be kept.

Next, consider the flooring material. Concrete is a popular choice because it can withstand heavy equipment, and it’s compatible with other options, such as vinyl, artificial turf, cork, rubber tiles, foam, and carpeting.

2. Ventilation

To prevent this problem, make sure there are doors and windows to open. Also, put in an air conditioner, filter, and ventilation ducts to prevent hot temperatures, humidity, and mold growth.

If you’re worried about dust or air pollution, install an air purifier and get a few plants that don’t require much light. Finally, put in a ceiling fan to increase air circulation; this is particularly helpful if the ceilings are high, as you won’t need to worry about bumping into the fixture.

3. Lighting & Colors

Even if you have plenty of natural light coming in from basement windows, install overhead lighting. It’ll help with motivation while working out, as a well-lit and bright space provides energy. If there isn’t much light from outside, put in full-spectrum daylight bulbs. Also, consider adding mirrors to the gym; they’ll reflect light, brighten the room, and make it easy to check your form while exercising.

For an energizing effect while lifting weights and doing cardio, utilize bold colors throughout the space, such as neon, gold, or red. For an area that’s used for yoga or meditation, pick mellow, soothing hues, like soft blues or light greens.
