Toilet overflows happen when you least expect it and can be frustrating. While the occasional overflow isn't always a cause for concern, continual flooding is often an indication of a more serious issue that may require the help of a plumber. Learn what steps you should take after an overflow in the following guide.

What Should You Do if Your Toilet Overflows?

1. Stop the Flow of Water

First, you need to stop the water from running. Remove the toilet lid and have someone press down on the rubber flap, then lift the float valve to prevent more water from entering the bowl.

Once the water has stopped flowing, locate the water shut off valve near the base of the toilet and turn it clockwise to shut it off. Letting go of the float valve will cause the water to run again, resulting in additional flooding. If you don’t have help, prop the float in place or turn off the valve yourself as quickly as possible to reduce water spillage.

2. Clean & Sanitize

plumberOnce you've stopped the flow, clean up the floodwater using towels or a water-safe Shop-Vac®, taking care to soak up any water that may have seeped into your carpets or surrounding fabrics. Using a mop or a washcloth, disinfect all surfaces that came into contact with the wastewater with a solution of one cup of bleach to one gallon of water.

Wear rubber gloves to protect your hands while working with abrasive chemicals. Make sure to wash the towels and washcloths in hot water and bleach to sanitize them after use.

3. Clear the Clog

Fit the cup of the plunger directly over the drain hole at the bottom of the bowl. Small obstructions will often release within a few pumps, allowing your toilet to flush properly. If plunging doesn't work, use a drain snake or an auger if you have one available.

In some cases, a clogged toilet can indicate a more serious issue, including a full septic tank or damaged sewer lines. A professional plumber can diagnose the problem and make any necessary repairs before they get worse.
