While face masks are vital for protecting yourself and others from COVID-19, long-term wear can trigger acne. Fortunately, making a few minor updates to your skin care routine can help reduce acne and make mask-wearing more comfortable. Explore the causes of mask acne, as well as ways to treat it, in the guide below.

What Causes Mask Acne?

Acne occurs when the pores in your skin become clogged by oil, makeup, dead skin cells, and dirt. The oil buildup causes inflammation and infection, resulting in blackheads, whiteheads, and pimples.

A daily skin care routine, including cleaning, exfoliating, and moisturizing, can promote the natural shedding process and reduce clogged pores. However, face masks can inhibit the shedding of dead skin cells, leading to further blockage throughout the day. The warm, moist conditions beneath your mask can also create a hospitable environment for bacterial growth, leading to breakouts.

How Can You Reduce Mask Acne?

skin careMask acne can be treated in much the same way as traditional acne. For milder cases, over-the-counter products, including benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid, are effective at killing acne-causing bacteria as well as exfoliating and unclogging pores.

Wash your face twice each day, then apply a non-comedogenic (oil-free) moisturizer afterward to prevent itching and dryness. Avoid wearing makeup beneath your mask, as it can block pores.

When choosing a mask, opt for soft, breathable materials, such as cotton. Synthetic fabrics, like polyester and nylon, don't breathe as well, resulting in moisture buildup and skin irritation. Also, ensure your mask fits your face comfortably but isn't too tight. An overly tight mask can push dirt and oil back into your skin.
