If your water heater keeps running out of hot water, you’ll end up dealing with inconveniences like cold showers. Likewise, appliances that rely on hot water—like your dishwasher or washing machine—won’t be able to operate at peak capacity. Thankfully, a seasoned plumber can identify the underlying problem and fix it. Use the following to learn about some of the most common reasons water heaters stop producing as much hot water as they should.

What Are the Causes of a Gradual Decrease?

If you’ve noticed a gradual reduction in the amount of hot water your faucets receive, sediment buildup may be to blame. While a little bit of sediment, which is comprised of dissolved minerals, is normal and won’t inhibit operations, a lot will displace a considerable amount of water in the tank.

This buildup will reduce the total hot water that’s available. It will also hinder the appliance’s ability to heat the remaining water because the heating source at the bottom of the tank won’t be able to transfer as much heat through the thick layer of sediment to the water above.

Signs of excessive buildup include a popping or knocking sound and a leaky TPR valve. If you notice either, call a plumber as soon as possible. They’ll flush the sediment out of the tank to avoid irreparable damage and the need for a replacement.

What Are the Causes of a Sudden Decrease?

plumberIf your water heater suddenly stops producing an adequate amount of hot water, there are a few possible causes. Examples include a broken dip tube and a faulty lower element.

The dip tube is responsible for directing cold water to the bottom of the tank, where it can be heated before it rises to the top. Without a functioning dip tube, incoming cold water will mix with the water that’s already been heated.

The lower element, on the other hand, does most of the actual heating. Whereas the upper element is merely responsible for maintaining a consistent temperature, the lower element is the one that ensures the water reaches the preset temperature in the first place.

As such, you’ll notice a severe reduction in available hot water if it starts malfunctioning. In this case, a plumber will need to replace the heater element.
