Every HVAC system makes noise when it’s running, but certain sounds are more problematic than others. That’s because some only happen when there’s a problem with the system. If you notice any of the following noises, it’s often a sign that you need to schedule repairs.

Diagnosing Strange HVAC Sounds

1. Squealing or Screeching

These unpleasant noises typically emanate from the system’s blower. The most likely culprit is a fan belt that’s worn down. If it isn’t replaced, it eventually snaps entirely and shuts the system down. However, the squealing or screeching can also be from the motor. Technicians can fix it by applying a special lubricant to prevent further grinding.

2. Outdoor Rattling

Sometimes, leaves or twigs find their way into the outdoor unit, and they get tossed around while the system is running. That creates a loud rattling, and these pieces should be removed to avoid extensive damage. If there is no debris, a piece of hardware is likely loose, which causes the sound. Tightening all of the components should fix this issue.

3. Whistling

HVACWhistling or wheezing sounds are common in the ducts around the air filters. These noises occur when the filters become clogged with debris like dirt, pollen, and pet dander. As they become embedded with these contaminants, the air makes a noise as passes through the clogged filters. Replace the filters once every two to three months to prevent any obstruction.

4. Hissing

This noise is also caused by air moving through the system, but it usually indicates a leak in the ductwork. Small punctures in the system’s ducts allow the air to escape. This also increases your utility bills because the air escapes behind the walls before it can heat or cool the home.

5. Clicking

Regular clicking is expected each time the system cycles on or off, but electrical failures could occur if the noise is ongoing. If it comes from the control panel or compressor, you likely have a failing thermostat or a relay that needs replacement. No matter the electrical problem, schedule an inspection. Any issue can put your home at risk of experiencing an electrical fire.
