The COVID-19 pandemic has made masks a part of everyday life. However, many people find that these covers harm their skin. "Maskne," or breakouts related to mask-wearing, is an increasingly common skin care complaint, so learn more about how to prevent it below.

Why Does Maskne Occur?

Maskne is a breakout on the parts of the face that are usually covered by masks, including the chin, nose, and cheeks. In addition to blemishes, such as pimples and blackheads, you may notice skin irritation, including redness and peeling. These issues occur for a few reasons.

First, the mask traps moisture against the skin. When you breathe, you release tiny droplets, which generally would be distributed into the air. With a mask on, they're confined, creating a humid environment against your skin. Second, the mask holds in oil, sweat, and bacteria, which results in clogged pores that can cause breakouts.

Over more extended periods, this friction wears down the top layer of skin. This also makes it easier for acne-causing bacteria to penetrate the top layer and settle into pores.

How Can You Prevent Maskne?

If possible, opt for a cotton mask, which is more breathable, to reduce sweatiness and oil production. Wash cotton masks regularly to eliminate microorganisms and dirt that can clog pores, and get rid of disposable masks after each use.

After coming home and removing your mask, wash your face with a gentle cleanser containing soothing ingredients, such as chamomile and aloe. Using a harsh astringent will dry out skin, which will increase oil production and your risk of clogged pores. Finally, moisturize with an unscented moisturizer to reduce flakiness and look for skin care products containing hyaluronic acid to repair the skin barrier if friction has caused damage.
