If termites have been feasting on your home, fumigation may be the best way to eliminate the infestation for good. While your home should be safe to enter after the exterminator’s tent comes down, you should take some steps before settling back in to restore your home’s comfort.

What to Do After Fumigation

1. Air the Place Out

The pest control company will remove dangerous gases before leaving, but you may still notice a lingering chemical smell that can trigger asthma attacks or other respiratory conditions. To get rid of unpleasant odors, open all the windows. Putting box fans in the windows facing outward can help air out your home quicker.

2. Clean Soft Surfaces

fumigationTermite fumigation gases don’t leave much residue on hard surfaces, but they can get trapped in upholstery, carpets, and clothing. If you didn’t remove or cover these items before leaving the house, give them all a thorough cleaning.

Get a carpet cleaner and shampoo the floors, and deep-clean all upholstery and soft furniture. Any clothing, towels, or other textiles should go through the laundry before using them again.

3. Treat the Rest of Your Property

Fumigation kills the termites inside and underneath your home, but it doesn’t affect insects living elsewhere on your property. Subterranean colonies living underground may eventually find their way into your home. Have your pest control company treat the rest of your property to reduce the risk that you’ll need to fumigate again.
