If you’re going out of town for an extended period, you’ll need to find a reliable car storage provider to park your vehicle. This solution is safer than leaving it in the garage or on the street, as a trained security team will watch over the car. Before you roll up to the facility, here are a few tasks to complete to prepare your ride.

Do:

Clean it.

Wash and wax the body to remove any dirt and grime particles; these small flecks will diminish the paint’s finish when the car sits in storage. Clear mud and tar from the wheels and bumper, and wash abrasive debris off the windows and windshield. Vacuum the cab thoroughly—food crumbs may attract pests and other perishables may break down, creating unwanted stains and odors.

Change the oil.

car-storageThe engine oil needs to run fluidly over the moving auto parts so that the car can run without overheating. Dirty oil that sits in the reservoir will thicken, making it challenging to start the vehicle when you bring it out of storage. Schedule an oil change before storing the car so that a mechanic can flush the tank of residue and replace it with new, clean fluid.

Don’t:

Leave it uncovered.

Moisture, dirt, and debris will scratch and wear at the body’s paint. Although this may seem like a cosmetic issue, the paint doubles as a protective barrier, shielding the metal body from moisture damage and rust.

Get a car cover that’s designed specifically for your make and model—this will ensure a snug fit to minimize the paint’s contact with water and dust. Make sure the body is completely dry before applying the cover so that moisture isn’t trapped under the fabric.

Keep the battery connected.

The vehicle’s electrical system runs slightly, even when the engine is off. This allows it to unlock the doors automatically, maintain the correct clock time, and receive signals from the key fob.

Disconnect the auto battery before leaving the car storage facility to prevent the electrical system from draining it while it sits. Place a towel on the floor of the backseat and leave the battery in the cab. Just remember to lock the doors manually with the key.
