The holidays are an exciting time for kids with a sweet tooth since there are many special treats that are only enjoyed this time of year. However, certain goodies can harm your little one's dental health, increasing their risk of cavities and other oral issues. Here are a few sweets a children’s dentist suggests to offer in moderation.

Which Holiday Treats Can Harm My Little One’s Smile?

1. Caramels, Taffy & Toffee

These sticky sweets are difficult to remove from teeth, and they’ll leave sugar residues behind. Sugar attracts mouth bacteria, which feed on the substance and produce plaque as they metabolize it.

When plaque sits on teeth, it increases the risk of cavities. If ignored, the plaque will calcify and turn into tartar, which can cause gum disease. If your child wants something sweet, give them a piece of chocolate instead—it’s easier to remove with regular brushing and flossing.

2. Baked Goods

cavitiesBaked goods, like brownies, gingerbread cookies, and fruitcakes, contain high levels of sugar that fuel cavity-causing bacteria. They also have starches from white baking flour, and these carbohydrates break down into simple sugars.

If holiday baking is part of your family’s tradition, opt for low-sugar recipes. After indulging in a sweet treat, ensure your child brushes and flosses thoroughly to remove any sugar and starchy residue.

3. Candy Canes & Peppermints

Biting on candy canes or peppermints can damage the protective enamel that coats the teeth, chipping or cracking it. When this barrier is compromised, it’s easier for bacteria to infiltrate the teeth and cause cavities.

Instead of letting your child crunch on a candy cane, give them a piece of sugar-free gum to chew on so they can still enjoy the peppermint flavors. As an added benefit, chewing on gum stimulates saliva production, which balances the mouth's pH and prevents acids from wearing away the enamel.
