Whether you’ve experienced a sports injury or have a chronic condition, like arthritis, your doctor may recommend orthopedic surgery to reduce pain and improve function. Knowing what to expect before, during, and after the procedure is crucial to achieving good results and a speedy recovery.

How to Prepare for Your Surgery

To prevent infections, your doctor may ask you to bathe with a special antibacterial soap the night before and the morning of the procedure. You may also be asked to remove nail polish, synthetic nails, and body piercings to avoid contaminating the sterile surgery room.

You’ll be provided dietary instructions, including a timeframe when you must begin fasting to prevent nausea when you wake. This usually takes place the night before, but your doctor will provide specific instructions based on the type of procedure and sedation you’ll receive.

What to Expect

The Day Of

surgeryBring an adult you trust on the day of—they’ll hold your belongings and drive you home after the procedure. You’ll undergo a brief health assessment so that the medical team can check your vitals to ensure you’re ready. You’ll be asked to remove clothing, including jewelry, and change into a hospital gown.

After the Surgery

Once the procedure is finished, you’ll be taken to a recovery room and monitored. Afterward, you may be placed in a hospital room or discharged with aftercare instructions.

Diligent wound care helps prevent infections. You’ll likely have to clean the site and change the bandage regularly. Take any prescriptions according to the instructions to get the most from the medication—don’t double the dosage or stop taking them prematurely. While you should refrain from strenuous activities so that the wound can close, you may also need to undergo physical therapy to ensure it heals properly.
