While you may not ride your motorcycle much in the winter, that doesn’t mean it’s safe from harm. Without proper preparation and a comprehensive motorcycle insurance policy, harsh weather, animals, or even thieves can leave the bike unusable when warm weather finally returns. Below are a few key tips for protecting your motorcycle from cold weather.

How to Store Your Bike This Winter

1. Wash & Wax

Over time, splattered bugs, dirt, and dried water droplets will compromise the bike’s paint, and corrosion will start eating away at the surface. Even if you store it under a cover, thoroughly clean the machine with a motorcycle-specific cleaner or mild dish soap and water, and dry it with a leaf blower. Apply a coat of wax to all the painted surfaces, and spray a film of WD-40® over any exposed metal.

2. Change the Oil

Before putting a motorcycle in storage, change the oil, and insert a new filter. Fresh oil also means the vehicle will be ready to go when next year’s riding season starts.

3. Choose the Right Cover

While tarps might keep water off the bike, they do not allow condensation to escape. This creates a humid environment, even in cold conditions. The material also hangs loose, allowing them to catch the wind and pull your bike over. This could possibly lead to expensive motorcycle insurance claims. Whether you’re storing the bike in the garage or parking it in the driveway, be sure to use a breathable and fitted cover designed for motorcycles.
