Since tile flooring is durable, many homeowners opt to install it in bathrooms and kitchens. Because the glazed layer protects against staining and water damage, tile can last for 75 years or longer. The key to making the flooring last is regular upkeep. Learn what cleaning and maintenance tasks you should perform and common mistakes to avoid below.

Do:

Use floor mats.

Dirt, pet dander, and additional grime stuck on the bottom of shoes can stick to tile floors. Once the particles settle, it will take a lot of elbow grease to remove them. To cut down on cleaning time, put mats at room entrances so people can wipe off their feet before entering.

Sweep regularly.

To restore the brilliant appearance of the flooring, mop the floors once every couple of weeks as well. A combination of warm water and soapless detergent will make the flooring shine without leaving chalky deposits behind.

Don’t:

Use steel wool and scouring pads for cleaning.

When scrubbing tile flooring, steer clear of scouring pads and those made of steel wool. Although the abrasive cleaning aids will remove grime, they will also leave scrapes and scratches in the finish. To prevent these surface blemishes, use a sponge mop instead.

Use ammonia-based cleaning products.

Although ammonia-based cleaners are often used to clean windows without leaving streaks, the products aren’t suitable for tile flooring. The harsh chemical can alter the color of porcelain tiles and stain the grout lines. Bleach should also be avoided for the same reason.
