In a perfect world, all the artwork you own would be on display all the time. However, as your circumstances—or perhaps your tastes—change, it may be necessary to put some pieces in a storage unit. In this case, it’s important to take a few steps to preserve them in the long term.

How to Preserve Artwork in Storage

1. Clean Every Surface

Cleaning artwork prior to storing it will prevent dust, dirt, and other contaminants from setting into the paint and damaging the piece over time.

Using a clean microfiber cloth, wipe all surfaces gently, particularly areas with canvas and paint. For added protection, apply a polish to the wood frame to prevent cracking and artwork-approved oil to the metal components to prevent rust.

2. Pad in Layers

Then, wrap the painting in plastic before slipping it into a protective styrofoam shell. Finally, place it in a box, and eliminate any empty space with bubble wrap.

For unframed pieces, lay them flat before wrapping them individually in glassine, which is a water-resistant glossy paper. Then, place each piece between slabs of foam board or cardboard, taping them securely. Finally, put them inside boxes.

3. Choose the Right Unit

Artwork can deteriorate when exposed to sunlight, humidity, or extreme temperatures. As such, avoid storing pieces in your attic, basement, or garage.

Instead, turn to a facility that offers climate-controlled storage units. These will keep the boxes dry and at a constant temperature, protecting them from sunlight and the elements.
