Whether you’re moving or starting a home renovation project, placing your upholstered furniture in a storage unit can free up much-needed space. To ensure your furniture stays in top condition during its stay, follow these do’s and don’ts to prepare each piece.

Do:

Correctly position items in the unit.

Although turning larger pieces of furniture on their sides will enable you to fit more items in the storage unit, they may sustain damage. Couches and chairs are meant to be placed on all legs to support their weight. Storing them on their sides may subject them to joint stress.

Clean the furniture thoroughly.

Storage UnitNeglecting to clean the furniture fabric can cause stains and odors to develop over time. Before packing the pieces in long-term storage, vacuum and wipe down the fabric with upholstery cleaner. Also, let the pieces completely dry to prevent mold and mildew from forming.

Don’t:

Put the furniture on the floor.

Allowing the upholstered furniture to touch the ground directly increases the likelihood of moisture damage because of decreased airflow within the unit. Storing the furniture on top of wooden pallets instead allows air to flow underneath the pieces.

Wrap items with plastic.

Wrapping furniture with plastic can trap moisture and create the perfect conditions for mold and mildew growth. Wooden elements may also warp or weaken as a result. To cover the furniture while allowing air to flow, use cloth coverings, such as sheets and blankets.
