The tongue is often overlooked when it comes to oral hygiene. Since it can harbor a lot of the bacteria that live in the mouth, your dentist may recommend actively cleaning it after brushing and flossing. Here are some strategies to follow for fresh breath and a healthy smile.

A Brief Guide to Tongue Hygiene

1. Use a Scraper

A tongue scraper is a flexible piece of plastic that conforms to the shape of your tongue. It pulls off the layer of mucus and bacteria that builds on the surface, typically looking like white buildup at the center of the tongue.

Scrape once a day after brushing your teeth. Start at the back of the tongue and move forward gently. Repeat two to five times until the film is mostly gone, rinsing the tool under warm water between steps. Wash with soap and dry thoroughly before storing it.

2. Rinse With Mouthwash

dentistAfter scraping your tongue, rinse your mouth with an alcohol-based mouthwash to kill any residual bacteria and freshen your breath.

Alternatively, use a warm saline solution. Mix some warm water with a teaspoon of salt, which will also eliminate harmful bacteria.

3. Monitor the Color

A healthy tongue is pink and may have a thin white coating before you scrape it. If that white layer is thick and spread across the entire surface, you may have a fungal infection like oral thrush. An unusually pale tongue could indicate a vitamin B12 deficiency, while an overly red surface could be a sign of disease-related inflammation.

If you notice these or any other unusual symptoms, have your dentist take a look. Depending on their findings, they might recommend changing your oral hygiene routine, drinking more water to address dry mouth, or prescribe an antifungal mouthwash to resolve an infection.
