Sewing machines make it easy to complete craft projects quickly. However, they may experience occasional issues that require your attention. These don’t always spell disaster; you can usually fix glitches with a few small adjustments. Here are some of the most common sewing machine problems people have and what to do if you experience them.

Troubleshooting Tips for Common Sewing Machine Issues

1. Sudden Stopping

Sewing machines use a motor to run the moving parts. This motor can get overheated if it runs for a long time, so if you’ve been sewing for a while and it stops, it may need to sit idle for a short while. If it doesn’t start up at all, ensure there’s power running to the machine and that the cords running to the wall and foot pedal are secure. Additionally, double-check that it’s not in bobbin-winding mode, as this would also prevent the machine from running normally.

2. Skipped Stitches

sewing machineA machine that is working properly should have even stitches, so if yours is skipping stitches or sewing them irregularly, there’s likely a problem with the needle. It may be bent due to thick fabric or tugging too hard on the piece as you sew. If you notice any imperfections, replace the needle. If your needle isn’t bent, it may be the wrong size for your particular project, so try sizing up to avoid skipped stitches.

3. Thread Bunching

When your machine creates a stitch, the thread should be flush with the fabric. If it is bunching up and creating a textured look or messy stitches, it’s likely a threading issue. Check that the bobbin is inserted correctly and check the tension. If there aren’t any noticeable problems, try re-threading the machine; it’s possible that you missed the take-up lever or forgot to raise the pressure foot, which could cause this problem.
