Laser hair removal is a procedure for anyone seeking permanent hair removal on their legs, underarms, or face. This treatment uses laser energy to shrink and remove the hair follicles on targeted parts of your body. Once this happens, hair will no longer grow in these areas. Here are some do’s and don’ts to keep in mind if you’re preparing for this procedure.

Do:

Have realistic expectations.

Laser hair removal is shown to be effective for a variety of skin types and colors, but your results may not look like someone else’s. Lighter and thinner hair is more difficult to remove than dark, coarse hair. You may need multiple sessions to achieve the results you want based on your skin and hair type.

Certain medications, like blood thinners, can interfere with your treatment. Your dermatologist may recommend that you stop taking some of these medications before your procedure.

Wear Sunblock

Wear sunblock that has an SPF of 30 or higher every time you go outside in the weeks leading up to the appointment. You should also avoid tanning beds for at least 6 weeks prior to your treatment. Wear a hat, sunglasses, and long clothing for more protection against the sun.

Don’t:

Pluck or Wax Before

Laser hair removal works by targeting the hair follicle. Plucking or waxing before the treatment pulls out the follicle and gives the laser nothing to work with. Do not pluck or wax at least 1 month prior to your procedure.

Instead, your dermatologist will recommend that you shave the day before or the morning of your procedure. This will protect your skin and leave enough hair for the laser to target.

Forget About Aftercare

You will need to follow the recommended aftercare to get the best results from your laser hair removal. Treat the area delicately for 2 to 3 weeks afterward. Do not rub, scratch, or shave the treated section of your skin.

Apply aloe vera or a recommended gel several times a day to keep your skin moist. Avoid chlorine, hot baths, and saunas for at least two days after the treatment. Contact your provider if you experience excessive peeling, crusty skin, or signs of infection.
