As a property owner, there are several factors to keep track of when a tenant moves out. In addition to finding a new occupant who meets your criteria, you may also be concerned about cleaning the property thoroughly and conducting any necessary repairs. However, you may not be thinking about changing the locks. Here’s more about why you should consider lock installation between tenants.

Why Is Changing Locks Important?

When you’re a property owner, you have the responsibility to keep your property safe. Preserving security isn’t always easy, especially if the previous tenants made additional keys to their units. Some tenants also make copies to give to family members or friends, while others hide spare keys in case they get locked out.

Changing the locks between tenants protects the new inhabitants from unexpected visitors who may have keys. When the locks are updated or replaced, you will be given new keys, which you can give to tenants. Some keys have “Do Not Duplicate” imprinted on them, which could deter copies from being made.

What’s the Difference Between Rekeying & New Lock Installation?

lock installationLock replacement involves a locksmith removing and replacing the internal locking chamber, or cylinder, of the lock. They’ll need to have access to the door to conduct the lock installation.

Replacement is needed anytime the previous locks have been compromised or damaged. Some landlords also opt for lock replacement if they are updating the entire door.

On the other hand, lock rekeying involves simply changing the way the inner components of the lock work so that it only opens with a new key. By moving the pins inside the tumbler portion of the lock, locksmiths can rekey multiple locks to match, or change all of them so that they work with a new key. Rekeying is faster and less expensive than lock replacement, which is why many landlords prefer this option.
