Although debit cards have become a  popular method of making purchases, checks are still useful in many situations, and still an important part of the financial services offered by your bank. If you’ve never used checks before, though, keeping a few tips in mind will help protect your bank account and prevent problems with your payments.

How to Use Checks Safely

1. Fill Checks Out Properly

When paying with a check, filling out all of the fields correctly ensures that your financial services provider will clear it and transfer funds to the payee in a timely manner. Fill out all of the fields, including the pay, the amount in words and numerals, and the date.

Don’t forget to sign the check, as well. If you make a mistake, void and destroy the check and use a new one instead of crossing out mistakes. That will cause problems with the bank and could cause it to be returned.

2. Prevent Theft

financial servicesThieves often use checks to steal money because there are numerous ways they can commit fraud, including forging signatures or changing amounts. To keep your account safe, never pre-sign checks or give anyone a blank check.

When writing out the amount, fill in extra space with the word “only” to prevent someone from changing the amount. Always follow an even dollar amount with 00/100 or “no cents” as well.

3. Keep Track of Your Checks

Every time you write a check, record the check number, amount, and payee in your check register. Compare this to your bank statement to ensure that it went through without trouble.

Take care to only write checks that will be covered by your account balance to prevent overdraft or returned check charges. If you bounce too many checks, your financial services provider may close your account, and it could be difficult for you to open new accounts in the future.
