Home security and safety are top priorities for most homeowners. When you sleep at night or go away on vacation, you’ll feel more at ease knowing your property is equipped with theft deterrents, such as surveillance cameras and alarm systems. As you get ready to make your home more secure, consider the following helpful do’s and don’ts.

Do:

Get a home security system.

Criminals are 300 times more likely to enter properties that do not have home security systems. These systems act as powerful theft and home invasion deterrents, as their closed-circuit televisions allow you to monitor the interior and exterior of your residence.

Some systems permit you to view CCTV footage remotely from your smartphone or tablet, which is convenient for keeping an eye on your property while at work or out of town.

Install cameras strategically.

home securityCameras should sit where the wall and roof meet, which provides the most expansive view of outdoor areas. This height also reduces the chances of criminals being able to reach cameras to damage or remove them. Additionally, the overhang from the roof will protect surveillance equipment from excess moisture.

Install cameras in locations where criminals would be most likely to breach your property. These may include near doors and windows surrounded by thick shrubbery, or adjacent to gates leading to your backyard and outbuildings.

Don’t:

Forget to install deadbolts.

Over 80% of criminals enter homes through first floor doors. Since knob locks and chains are easy to breach, all exterior doors should have deadbolts.

Those made from hardened steel are extremely difficult to cut or saw through. Include them on exterior doors, including garages and sheds. Additionally, install sliding locks on windows to make them challenging to force open.

Keep outdoor areas dark.

Criminals often enter homes in dark areas where eyewitnesses and security cameras cannot see them clearly. In particularly dark outdoor areas, such as the sides of your home, install motion-sensing floodlights that will illuminate when they detect intruders, potentially scaring them away.
