Warts can grow on the soles of the feet, particularly if you have a weakened immune system or a history of them. Unfortunately, they can cause discomfort when walking and spread if left untreated. Here are a few suggestions to help you deal with this condition.

How to Avoid Warts on Your Feet

Foot warts are caused by a strain of human papillomavirus (HPV), a viral infection transmitted through skin contact. While the strain responsible for this skin condition isn’t highly contagious, it’s still best to limit contact with surfaces where others have walked in bare feet. Since the virus thrives in warm, humid environments, wear sandals when walking in locker rooms, public showers, and around pools.

If your skin has a scrape or cut, the virus can be transmitted to you through a shared object. Avoid sharing socks, footwear, and nail clippers with others to minimize the risk.

Skin dryness can exacerbate cuts and leave you more vulnerable to infection. Before going to bed, moisturize with lotion, cream, or petroleum jelly to wake up to softer and healthier feet.

How to Prevent Them From Spreading

To prevent existing warts from spreading, keep your feet as dry and clean as possible. Wash them with a mild soap, pat them dry, and wear new socks every day. Try not to scratch the lesions, as this could aggravate them. If you use a foot file or pumice stone, avoid touching the warts. When your tool grazes the affected skin, clean it with soap before applying it over healthy skin.

Visit a foot doctor if you have warts, particularly if they hurt, bleed, or change in appearance over time. If you experience discomfort when walking or running, a professional will assess the condition and determine the appropriate treatment to restore your quality of life.
