As COVID-19 continues to affect much of the world, Americans are gearing up for another flu season. It runs from September through February, and it’s especially critical for seniors aged 65 and up to prepare. Older individuals are at an increased risk of complications from influenza. Here are a few health care tips to help you prepare for the flu season.

How Seniors Can Prepare for Flu Season

1. Get Vaccinated

While the influenza vaccine is invaluable for individuals of all ages, it's of particular importance for seniors during the 2020-2021 flu season in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. To protect yourself this winter, speak with your health care provider about both the flu and pneumococcal pneumonia vaccines.

Because the flu vaccine takes about two weeks to provide immunity, it's important to get it in the fall before the virus peaks in winter. While the flu vaccine is not 100% effective, it can reduce the risk of flu illnesses and serious outcomes.

2. Strengthen Your Immune System

Your immune system protects you from disease-causing microorganisms, like influenza. A healthy immune system can ward off invading pathogens, helping you recover from viral infections faster.

You can also boost your immunity by getting plenty of sleep and enjoying a healthy diet of foods that are high in vitamins and nutrients, such as fruits and vegetables.

3. Practice Good Hygiene

Like the novel coronavirus, influenza viruses are highly transmissible and can survive on nonporous surfaces for up to three days.

Next to vaccination, some experts state that handwashing is the next best step to prevent catching the flu. To reduce transmission and your risk of contamination, wash your hands several times a day with soap and warm water for at least 40 seconds.

Sanitize frequently used surfaces such as countertops, doorknobs, handrails, remote controls, and faucets with disinfectant cleaners or wipes. If you can't get to a sink, carry an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with you to avoid contamination while you're out.
