As boating season draws to a close, it’s time to get ready for the winter cold. Certain precautions are essential for preserving the condition of your watercraft, whether it’s selecting a storage space or performing routine inspections. If you are unsure where to start, use the following guide to provide a proper level of protection for your boat.

How to Ready a Boat for Winter

1. Run the Engine

Listen to the sound of the engine. If you hear a gravelly noise, it could indicate that the bearings in the alternator or fresh-water pump are about to fail. Slight variations in sound usually signal the presence of a leak, and a loud squealing could mean that there’s a loose belt. Preserve the boat’s functionality by performing repairs prior to putting it in its storage space.

2. Wash Every Surface

Give the boat a thorough washing to prevent further damage. Patch any visible cracks or blisters along the ship’s exterior, and apply a fresh layer of wax to protect it against the elements.

3. Flush the Engine

Allowing dirty fluids to remain in the engine for months at a time could increase the potential for corrosion. Empty the coolant and oil reservoirs before changing out the filters. Top them off with brand new products, and fill the gas tank with a stabilizer mixture to keep the fuel fresh. Run the engine one last time to ensure that the additives have a chance to reach the fuel lines.

4. Lubricate Moving Parts

The steering wheel and control mechanisms have a tendency to stiffen up while sitting in storage. This is also the case for hinges, door handles, and latches. Ensure that these features will withstand colder weather by applying a light layer of lubricant. Move each part back and forth to provide a thorough and even coat.
