Many people visit their local ATV dealer during the winter to liven up the season. All-terrain vehicles make for an exciting but safe ride as you sweep through the snow. But whether you want to store them for the season or use them to infuse some fun into the winter, all ATVs need to be specially prepared before the cold sets in.

How Do You Prepare Your ATV for Winter Storage?

By properly storing your ATV during the winter, it'll endure the cold and be ready for off-roading once everything thaws.

ATVs either have a plastic or metal gas tank. Drain the fuel from the carburetor, the fuel lines, and the tank if the quad uses a plastic model. An ATV with a metal tank needs to be filled and have a stabilizer attached. Since metal can rust in humid areas, the stabilizer will limit potential moisture in the tank and prevent long-term damage.

Inflating the tires during the winter will ensure that the pressure remains acceptable for the season. While you'll still have to reflate the tires again in the spring, they'll have a reduced risk of going fully flat, which damages them.

Even if you’re storing the ATV indoors, cover it in breathable fabrics, like cotton, merino wool, or nylon, which allow moisture to escape if it gets into the vehicle, preventing rust.

How Do You Prepare Your ATV for Winter Use?

ATV DealerIf you want to use your ATV to take in Pennsylvania's abundant scenic beauty, first make sure it's running safely.

Check the ATV's fuel line and tank for moisture. During the winter, cold temperatures create condensation in the tank. If water seeps into the gas, the engine won't start. Moisture can also freeze the fuel lines, preventing gas from reaching the engine.

Like car batteries, ATV batteries are vulnerable to cold temperatures. Keep the battery out of the quad when it's not in use. Store it in the house or garage where it's warm. However, investing in a trickle charger or a smart charger will allow the battery to stay in the machine without freezing or losing power.

In general, ATVs run on either lead-acid or lithium batteries. They both have their benefits in the winter based on your needs. An ATV dealer can help you decide if you're ready for a new battery.

If the engine oil deteriorates, the ATV will lose power. Be sure to change the oil and filter often and make sure it's topped off.
