Growing out your nails can be difficult if you deal with breaking, chipping, and cracking. The most important factor in growing out your nails will be keeping their keratin as healthy and strong as possible. With the help of your trusted salon, you can achieve your nail growth goals.

How to Grow Out Your Nails

1. Supplement with Biotin

Biotin is a B-vitamin that helps the body turn food into energy. It supports stronger keratin growth, which is the building block of your nails and hair. One study found that after a six-month period, patients with brittle nails showed a 25 percent increase in their nail plate thickness.

Aim for at least 2.5 milligrams daily, which you can add to your diet with supplements. It can also be consumed naturally in nuts, cooked eggs, cauliflower, and whole grains.

2.  Get a Gel Manicure

manicureUnlike traditional nail polish, gel manicures fuse to the nail through a vitamin-rich base coat. This manicure, when done professionally at the salon, will last between two and four weeks.

During this time, it will protect the natural nail from damage such as chipping or cracking. As they grow, your manicurist can fill in the edges to lengthen the gel’s lifespan and keep the nails growing.

3. Moisturize Them

Nails are often overlooked when it comes to moisturizing; they can dry out just as your skin does. Apply cuticle oil or cream to the skin around the nails and at the base of the nail where the cuticle grows out. Do this two or three times a day.

By moisturizing your nails and avoiding chemicals that dry them out—such as the glue from glue-on nails or harsh cleaning chemicals as you clean the house—they’ll stay healthy.
