While you should walk your dog each day for bathroom breaks, you don’t want to stay outside for too long during winter. Despite the cold weather, dogs need exercise and mental stimulation to remain healthy and happy. In addition to health and wellness tips provided by your veterinarian, you can also do the following to ensure your pet is happy through the winter months.

How Can I Make Sure My Dog Gets Enough Exercise This Winter?

1. Play Indoor Games

Just because it’s snowing outside doesn’t mean your dog can’t play. Clear out some space and relocate fragile belongings so you can play a game of fetch with them.

You can also play a version of hide-and-seek by hiding a treat somewhere in your home and allowing your dog to find it. These games are beneficial for exercise, but they’re also mentally stimulating.

2. Buy a Puzzle Toy

veterinarianJust like people, dogs can also get bored when they lack stimulation. Puzzle toys are a must-have for dog owners, especially during the cold months when you want to stay indoors. There are a ton of puzzle toys to choose from, including rubber toys that store treats, which your dog will have to work to get access to.

There are also mats with fabric where treats can be hidden. Your pet will need to sniff through the fabric to find their treat, much like their natural sniffing behavior outdoors.

3. Take Your Dog on Day Trips

Most canines love going on car rides. Consider stopping by a pet-friendly coffee shop to get out of the house every once in a while. You can also take a special trip devoted to your pup by visiting your local pet store where they can walk around and pick out a new toy. Going to new places and interacting with others will benefit your dog's physical and mental health.
