Basic Boat Service Checklist

1. Replace the Engine Oil

Before taking the boat out for the first time of the season, drain any remaining engine oil and replace it with a fresh supply. As the boat sits in storage during the offseason, the oil grows stale and becomes thicker.

Oil sludge doesn’t move through the engine as efficiently, and it leads to more frequent overheating. Refer to the owner’s manual to determine what type of oil is needed.

2. Clean the Exterior

Beyond just maintaining the vehicle’s appearance, regularly cleaning the boat’s hull keeps it operating efficiently. Once every three months, the hull should be cleaned using a soft-bristled brush or sponge and eco-friendly soap.

That removes any accumulated dirt or sea salt that causes abrasions and scratches. For additional protection, have a fresh coat of polish applied in the spring and before storing it away in winter.

3. Rinse Upholstery

The vinyl fabric on the deck’s seating is treated to resist UV damage and mold, but it will still fall apart without regular cleanings. Once every few weeks, have the seats wiped down with soap and warm water.

After removing all of the accumulated debris, a protectant sealant is added to the fabric’s surface. This provides additional protection from the elements and prevents it from drying out.

4. Flush the Engine

Failing to flush the engine after each outing allows mineral deposits and sludge to build up. Over time, these buildups restrict oil flow and cause it to overheat.

Connect a garden hose over the flush muffs and fit them over the water intakes. Once connected, turn the water on, start the engine, and let it run for at least five minutes.

5. Inspect the Battery

Before each outing, check the battery terminals for any signs of corrosion. Corroded terminals limit the amount of energy transferred to the engine, which could leave you stuck out on the water. If you notice any signs of corrosion, clean the area using a solution of baking soda and water.
