If your dentist identified advanced dental decay and infection through an X-ray, they might have recommended a root canal. This treatment can be completed comfortably and will restore your oral health. Here’s what you need to know to prepare for the procedure.

What Does a Root Canal Do?

Each tooth has hard enamel throughout the exterior, a slightly softer layer called dentin, and a small amount of soft tissue and nerves called pulp. The pulp runs down each tooth root in narrow channels known as canals, meeting in a larger hollow within the tooth.

The pulp can get infected due to dental decay. In response to the infection, the tissue swells and becomes irritated as it meets the enamel barrier. Once the soft tissue has been infected, it cannot recover on its own; instead, the tissue will die and the remaining bacteria will attack other parts of the mouth. You may experience cavities and gum disease in surrounding areas as the decay progresses, and the affected tooth will eventually fall out.

root canalA root canal is the most effective treatment for an infected tooth. The process allows your dentist to remove the infected tissue and replace it with a sterile filler. The treatment eliminates the infection, prevents further decay and tooth loss, and allows you to preserve your natural tooth. It also resolves the pain that typically accompanies an ongoing infection.

What Happens During a Root Canal?

First, your provider numbs the area using a local or general anesthetic. Then, they create an opening above the affected tooth to access the infected tissue. Using specialized tools, they clean out each root canal to remove infected, compressed tissue. They fill in the gaps with sterile, safe materials to keep bacteria out. Finally, the dentist places a crown over the site to seal the opening and support the tooth’s structure.

You may require up to three appointments—one to assess the damage and clean out the tooth, a second to take a mold of the area to prepare a crown, and a third to place the permanent crown.
