Safely storing your lawn equipment protects it from the elements and ensures it lasts. However, finding the right spot for landscaping tools like a lawn mower can be challenging, especially if you're low on space. Here are a few ways to store this machine.

How to Store a Lawn Mower

1. Construct a Storage Shed

Not every home has a shed or the space to accommodate a mower in their garage.  Fortunately, lawn equipment doesn't require much space, and even a small storage shed may be enough room to protect your mower.

If there’s enough space in your yard, consider a small, prefabricated shed. Or, if you're handy, you might consider building it yourself. Measure the size of your mower before selecting the building materials to ensure the machine will fit and that it can be taken out and put away with ease.

2. Use a Protective Cover

If a storage shed isn't an option, a protective cover can also defend the mower from the elements when it's not in use. Many manufacturers sell fitted covers that are water-resistant and designed to withstand a variety of inclement weather conditions.

You can also fashion a cover yourself using a large tarp and bungee cords. Wrap the tarp around your mower, securing it underneath with the cords. Or, secure the edges of the tarp with bricks or other heavy objects to prevent water and debris from penetrating. 

3. Use a Lift

If your lawn mower doesn't fit on the floor space in your garage, consider installing a jack that allows you to utilize the vertical space. Lawn mower jacks can be found in most home improvement or hardware stores and operate similarly to a traditional jack by elevating the mower up and out of the way.

Install the lift along a wall in your garage where it can be stored above your vehicle or additional stored items and easily lowered when you need to use it. Check the weight of your mower before purchasing a jack to ensure it can safely support your machine.
