Getting your child ready for pre-K isn’t necessarily a challenge, but it does require some thought. It’s important to put together comfortable outfits that are practical for the day, easy to wear, and won’t distract your little one. Here’s what all parents should know as they plan for the school year.

A Guide to Pre-K Clothing

1. Focus on Fit

The right fit is crucial for your child’s comfort. Kids spend a fair amount of time moving around during the school day, so seek out flexible, lightweight garments made of durable fabric like cotton.

Even when they’re seated, children can feel if their pants ride down or shirts feel snug. If they’re between sizes, consider choosing the size up. This will keep them comfortable and allow them to grow into the item.

2. Keep It Simple

pre-KIt’s fine to choose fun, colorful garments featuring your child’s favorite characters, colors, and patterns. However, simple, practical clothes are best for pre-K students.

Avoid extravagant details—like lace, ruffles, and sequins—that might snag or tear. These pieces may become especially dirty while your little one runs around on the playground or plays with art supplies in the classroom.

3. Choose Easy Shoes

Avoid footwear with open toes and complex closing mechanisms. Opt for sneakers and comfortable socks that provide support when they’re running and playing. Shoes with Velcro® straps are ideal because they’re easy to wear and remove and simple for children to resecure if they come unstrapped.

4. Pack Extra Clothes

Your child’s teacher might request that you pack a change of clothing in the event of a spill or accident. Keep these clothes practical for the season, and be sure to include underwear and socks in the bag or backpack. These clothes can remain in your child’s cubby year-round for convenience.

5. Label Items Carefully

Write your child’s name on the tags of garments they’re likely to remove. Kids could easily grab sweaters, jackets, sweatshirts, and coats that don’t belong to them. This way, teachers can make sure all students have the right pieces at the end of the day.
