Staying home is the best way to protect yourself and others from COVID-19. For optimal safety, you may want to take some extra precautions around the house. In addition to disinfecting surfaces regularly, making some HVAC system adjustments may be beneficial. Here are a few tips.

4 HVAC System Tips for a Healthy Home

1. Use Natural Ventilation

Maintaining sufficient ventilation is key to maintaining a healthy home environment. In addition to reducing the risk of indoor pollution buildup and mold growth, adequate airflow can reduce the risk of COVID-19 and other germs accumulating.

If possible, open windows for at least 30 minutes a day to allow air to circulate. You may also be able to increase the outdoor air percentage your HVAC system utilizes. Like opening windows, this can limit indoor air recirculation.

2. Adjust Humidity Levels

HVAC systemViruses tend to be least viable in environments at around 40-60% relative humidity. Try to maintain this level in your home. If necessary, consider investing in a humidifier to keep moisture levels within an optimal range.

3. Clean or Change Filters

Ensure your HVAC filter is clean. HVAC air filters are designed to keep dust and debris from accumulating on the system’s interior components. When they are dirty, the appliance may have to work harder to produce adequate airflow and maintain the designated temperature, resulting in greater energy consumption and higher utility bills.

Filters also play a role in keeping indoor air clean by trapping particles and preventing them from circulating. For this reason, they’re also important for maintaining a healthy household.

4. Adjust & Clean Vents & Fans

Most heating and AC system vents are not at the head level. However, if yours is, you may want to ask your contractor to relocate it. Vents that disperse air at people’s face level are more likely to spread respiratory droplets from one person to another via the air current.

Also, be sure to disinfect vents and fans regularly. This will also help decrease the transmission of germs and bacteria through the air.

In addition to these tips, scheduling a routine inspection is a good way to ensure your HVAC system is up to par. If you live in the Cincinnati area, call on A & B Heating & Air Conditioning.
