Before cashing in that change you’ve been saving—or spending it on parking meters or vending machines—inspect the coins closely. Chances are there’s at least one that’s worth more than 25 cents. Learn about some of the most common collectible coins that people overlook below.

What Rare Coins Are in Circulation?

1. 2004 Wisconsin State Quarter

Some of the Wisconsin state quarters that were minted in 2004 have an extra leaf on the ear of corn. Look for an additional line below the front left leaf. If you have any quarters with this imperfection, they may be worth as much as $300 each.

2. 1982 Roosevelt Dime

All dimes should have a mint mark comprised of a single letter, which states where they were made. In 1982, though, some dimes were released into circulation without this. Authentic “no mint mark” dimes can fetch as much as $50 apiece.

3. 2007 Presidential Dollar Coin

coinsIn 2007, the U.S. Mint started producing dollar coins featuring different presidents. Some of the earliest coins that were printed—especially those depicting George Washington—are either missing a letter or have an extra letter along the edge. The value of these imperfect coins ranges from about $50 to $3,000.

4. 1995 Penny

Some of the pennies that were minted in 1995 were double printed, giving the letters in “Liberty” and “In God We Trust” a blurred shadow effect. These range in value from $20 to $50. The printing error also occurred in 1969 and 1972. “Double die” pennies from these years are generally worth even more because of their age.
