Large backyards offer many possibilities for adding unique features. However, all that space and extra maintenance can be overwhelming for homeowners. If you’re redesigning an outdoor space and want to make it as user-friendly as possible, keep these landscape design tips in mind.

What Are Some Landscaping Ideas for Large Backyards?

1. Create Zones

landscape designMost people use their yards for multiple purposes; you might host small barbecues, play sports with the kids, and sit and relax with a nice book. In small backyards, one space has to work for all these purposes, but in a large yard, you can have designated areas for each one. For example, you might have a small deck off the back of the house that’s just for your family to relax, a larger patio that’s perfect for gatherings, and a grassy area for the kids to play.

2. Break Up Green Space

Even if you want some grass for kids and pets, lots of maintenance will be required for several acres of grass, and you may not be pleased with the lack of visual variety. To add interest and decrease maintenance, break up the land with other landscaping and hardscaping features. For example, add a brick walkway between two sections, or have mulched areas around the exterior where you can add trees and other plants.

3. Choose Native Plants

A large yard with tons of plants is likely to require significant maintenance. Even if you love gardening, you may not be able to keep track of a huge variety of items with different needs. To simplify your landscaping work, stick with plants that are native to the area since they’re better suited to grow in your soil and climate and won’t require as much care.
