While you may not plan to take your motorcycle out in dangerous conditions, the weather can quickly turn and present hazards. That’s why all motorcyclists must know how to safely navigate inclement weather. Before leaving home, the first step is to have a comprehensive motorcycle insurance policy in place to protect you in the event of an accident. Discover a few additional tips to prepare for bad weather.

A Guide to Motorcycle Safety in Bad Weather

1. Check Your Tire Tread

Every few months, measure your tire tread. Sufficient tread ensures the motorcycle's tires can fully grip the road for optimal traction during slippery conditions.

To measure, slip a penny into the tread with Lincoln's head upside-down and facing you. If you see all of Lincoln's head, the tread is in good shape; if any part of the head is hidden, you may need new tires. New tires are investments that can prevent a bad-weather accident and the need to file a motorcycle insurance claim.

2. Apply a Water Repellant to Your Face Shield

For best results, clean and polish your helmet regularly, and spray a water repellant on the face shield. A repellant will cause water to bead up and run off the surface so you can see more clearly during inclement weather conditions.

3. Slow Down

Pouring rain might compel you to try to get to your destination as soon as possible. But wet roads and less visibility make speeding in bad weather a serious accident risk.

Slow down, check that your lights are on, and keep a firm grip on the handles. Don't hesitate to pull over at a gas station or service stop until the weather passes. It may take longer to get where you're going, but at least you won’t endanger yourself or others.
